I. Design Concept
This textbook is a set of combined rolling-style materials designed for short-term students of Chinese (not exceeding two months). Based on the needs of short-term Chinese learners and the characteristics of short-term teaching, the textbook is structured around communicative functions, with a focus on listening and speaking training, rather than systematic grammar. In terms of vocabulary selection, it is based on the Outline for Chinese Proficiency Vocabulary and Characters Grading, while also incorporating many new and colloquial words and phrases from daily life. The textbook is divided into three levels, with two stages per level. Specifically:
(Primary Level) Basic Part (1), Basic Part (2)
(Intermediate Level) Improvement Part (1), Improvement Part (2)
(Advanced Level) Expansion Part (1), Expansion Part (2)
II. Features of the Textbook
1. Combination
The textbook adopts a combined format, divided into 6 levels from primary to advanced. Each level follows a one-month cycle, with one lesson per day, and each book contains 20 lessons. The vocabulary in each book ranges from 400 to 600 words. The 6 books can be used individually or together. This approach meets the needs of learners at all levels and is easy for teachers to implement.
2. Rolling
Since most short-term students are visiting China for the first time, even those who have studied Chinese for a long time in their home country are not familiar with China. Therefore, we adopt an alternating rolling and expanding method for communicative functions, meaning that common and necessary functions appear in each book, but the content presenting these functions gradually expands and deepens with different levels. In the Expansion Parts, more socio-political and cultural elements are incorporated, extending communicative tasks into topic discussions, truly broadening the content of the Expansion Parts. The textbook also gradually increases vocabulary, with key words and sentence patterns frequently revisited across different books. This alternating rolling and expanding approach differs from previous textbooks and is highly targeted and practical for short-term classes within two months.
3. Practicality
The textbook emphasizes practicality, with vocabulary, sentence patterns, functions, and exercises all focused on practicality. We believe that mastering vocabulary is the most important aspect of Chinese learning, as vocabulary and communicative functions are inseparable.
4. Vividness
Due to the intensive and accelerated nature of short-term teaching, the textbook not only strives to be lively and interesting in content but also pays attention to being richly illustrated. Both the lessons and exercises are accompanied by numerous illustrations.
