The method for calculating the fertile period starts from the first day of the next menstrual period, and then counts backward 14 days or subtracts 14 days to find the ovulation day. The fertile period includes the ovulation day itself, the 5 days before it, and the 4 days after it. Sexual intercourse during the fertile period is most likely to result in pregnancy. Because sexual intercourse during the fertile period makes pregnancy more likely, this period is also called the "fertile window" or "dangerous period."
