Is the corpus luteum cyst caused by no ovulation?

Patient's question:

Since the past few months, I have been experiencing some abdominal pain. When I went to the hospital for a thorough check-up, the doctor prescribed many medications, but they didn't help. I have been trying to get pregnant recently, but I cannot conceive. I used to have a corpus luteum cyst, and the abdominal pain persisted for a long time before it fully healed. Is the corpus luteum cyst caused by insufficient menopause?

Doctor's answer:

A corpus luteum cyst is formed by the luteinization of the epithelial cells of the unmenopausal follicular wall, hence it is also known as a luteinized cyst. After normal menopause, due to certain reasons, the corpus luteum may not develop sufficiently. A corpus luteum cyst is not necessarily pathological, so an ovarian cyst usually refers to a follicular cyst and a luteinized cyst. The corpus luteum is a non-disease, and its diameter will never be less than 5 centimeters, typically about 2 centimeters. This is physiological. After menopause, it forms a follicular cavity. During the secretory phase, it should secrete progesterone to alter the endometrium. If pregnancy does not occur, the corpus luteum cyst will naturally disappear after menstruation without the need for medication. This can be monitored through regular check-ups. The corpus luteum is caused by menopause. In daily life, it is important to quit smoking and drinking, and avoid spicy and irritating foods.
