How to deal with inverted nipples during breastfeeding

Patient's question:

My nipples are inverted, and now it's very inconvenient for the child to breastfeed. So, I'd like to ask, how should inverted nipples during breastfeeding be corrected?

Doctor's answer:

There are symptoms of nipple inversion, making it difficult for the child to feed. You can pull the nipple upward and outward daily to improve nipple protrusion, always maintain local cleanliness and hygiene, and take frequent baths. Nipple inversion may also increase the risk of breast diseases. You can go to the hospital's breast surgery department for a follow-up examination, undergo detailed tests such as color Doppler MRI, and receive treatment after diagnosis. If it is caused by a disease, you should actively treat it, and surgery may be necessary if needed. Alternatively, you can place two fingers around the areola and push the nipple outward toward the weaker center. Doing this frequently will gradually restore it. If the inverted nipple can heal with slight pushing or pulling, it is considered mild nipple inversion, also known as correctable nipple inversion.
