Can you eat while taking birth control pills?

Patient's question:

After sex, I drank some water and ate some snacks, but I haven't taken the birth control pill yet. Can I eat something before taking the birth control pill? I don't really understand these things yet.

Doctor's answer:

Contraceptives generally refer to birth control pills for women, which are often a combination of estrogen and progestogen, but also include single-progestogen pills and many non-steroidal drugs. Contraceptives can interfere with different stages of the perinatal process, thereby going beyond the purpose of preventing pregnancy. Taking emergency contraception requires an empty stomach, meaning that no food should be consumed two hours before or after taking it. If you have just taken emergency contraception, you should not eat. If you are genuinely hungry, you should wait at least two hours before eating. Otherwise, it may cause nausea and vomiting. If vomiting occurs again, it may interfere with the effectiveness of breastfeeding. Emergency contraception is not suitable as a routine method for breastfeeding; it should not be taken less than three times within a year.
