How is candidal vulvitis caused?

Patient's question:

Vaginal candidiasis? Hello, doctor and wife got candidiasis during pregnancy. What are the common causes of transmission of candidiasis vaginitis? How does candidiasis vaginitis occur? What is the problem with candidiasis vaginitis? Thank you

Doctor's answer:

Candidal vulvovaginitis is more common in pregnant women. This is because pregnant women have lower estrogen and progesterone levels than non-pregnant women, which enhances the sugar content of the vaginal epithelium, leading to the cell division and growth of Candida. Generally, women do not need treatment during the first three months of pregnancy. If the condition is severe, doctors may prescribe appropriate medication after the third month of pregnancy, which will never cause infection to the fetus. It usually heals on its own before delivery. (However, sometimes the fetus may have localized eye or mouth infections during delivery, which could be due to a very small amount of Candida infection during the delivery process through the birth canal. It can be treated immediately in newborns without concern).
