The Chinese Abroad is the first panoramic documentary in the history of Chinese-language television to comprehensively record the Chinese diaspora worldwide. In 2001, at the age of 48, Zhao Xiaolan became the 24th U.S. Secretary of Labor, becoming the first Chinese cabinet member in American political history. Zhao Xiaolan was born in 1953 in Jiading, Shanghai. She immigrated to the United States with her parents at the age of 8. In 1975, she graduated from Manhattanville College with a major in economics. In 1979, she obtained a master's degree from the Harvard Business School and later served as a senior accountant at Citibank in New York. From 1983 to 1984, she was selected as a "White House Fellow." From 1984 to 1986, she served as the vice president of international finance at the Bank of America in San Francisco. In 1986, she left her career in business for politics and became the deputy administrator of the Maritime Administration at the U.S. Department of Transportation. In 1988, she served as the chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission. In 1989, she became the undersecretary of transportation.
