Is it normal to have a period one month after a C-section?

Patient's question:

I recently feel some pain in my stomach and there is a little bit of blood flowing from below. Now that this situation has occurred, is it normal for a Cesarean section to have menstruation one month after giving birth?

Doctor's answer:

The time of menstruation after childbirth varies among individuals. Generally, it takes about six months postpartum for menstruation to fully recover. Breastfeeding can delay the complete recovery of menstruation for some women. Among fully breastfeeding women, about one-third experience complete recovery of menstruation within three months postpartum, with the earliest occurring eight weeks after childbirth. However, some women may not fully recover menstruation until one to one and a half years postpartum, and a few may not have menstruation at all during the entire breastfeeding period. In women who do not breastfeed, about 91% experience complete recovery of menstruation within two months postpartum, typically six to eight weeks after childbirth, with some individuals recovering within four to six weeks.
