Before leaving Changsha in early February 2002, Fan Xiaoyan returned from Shenzhen to Changsha to attend the class reunion celebrating their 20th graduation anniversary. Before departing, she told me that the two books she compiled, Appreciation of Three Hundred Tang Poems and Translation and Appreciation of Three Hundred Song Lyrics, were scheduled for a new edition as a set, and she diligently asked me to write the preface for them. She said that she did not expect the teacher to say anything for these two small books, but only hoped that the friendship between the teachers and students over two decades could leave a trace in writing. I was deeply moved upon hearing this, so I gladly took up the pen and wrote this short essay."
