Features: Theodore Roosevelt attracted me early on; he was energetic and a man full of contradictions: he suffered from asthma in his youth, appearing quite scholarly, yet he later became a rugged Western cowboy; he vigorously promoted the conservation of natural resources while also being passionate about hunting wildlife; he was obsessed with war yet won the Nobel Peace Prize; he reluctantly entered the presidential race at first, yet he was elected and served two terms; he was a loyal Republican who later caused a split within the party, dividing it in two; he was a devout Roman Catholic who sent his sons to bloody battlefields; he was an idealist in politics yet could navigate among those money-grubbing businesspeople. His daughter Alice thought her father was perfect, unworthy of being a great leader of his generation. This makes us wonder, however, whether this great leader would have been suitable for our current era? — Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919), a U.S. military leader and politician, the 26th President of the United States. He served as the Deputy Secretary of the Navy and advocated for war before the Spanish-American War, becoming a hero in the conflict. He was the first to recognize the importance of protecting natural resources and worked tirelessly toward it; he actively enforced antitrust laws; in international affairs, he often achieved surprising victories that left people in awe. His legendary experiences earned admiration worldwide. In fact, Theodore Roosevelt was a president who stepped onto the world stage, foreseeing the important role the United States would play as a world power in international affairs.
