International settlement is a compulsory course for majors in finance (especially international finance) and trade (especially international trade). In the curriculum arrangements of these majors, considering the progressive learning process, this course is a follow-up to international trade and international finance, can be offered concurrently with trade credit, and serves as a foundational course for foreign exchange accounting. For students of international trade, it can also be offered concurrently with foreign trade correspondence and foreign trade documents. A key feature of international settlement is its cross-border nature—any international settlement transaction necessarily involves two different economies, and the political, economic, financial, and trade laws and regulations of these economies often differ. To ensure smooth settlement and protect the legitimate rights and interests of the parties and the smooth progress of trade, corresponding international practices must be accepted and followed by all parties involved. Many factors influence the formulation and implementation of international practices, including the interests and subjective will of the parties involved, as well as objective factors such as relevant technologies and economic development levels. Therefore, international practices themselves are the product of coordinating various relationships and must be adjusted or revised in a timely manner in response to changes in multiple aspects. Thus, when studying international settlement, it is essential to pay close attention to the provisions of international practices while also being aware of their developments and changes. Especially since China is still in the process of transitioning from a traditional planned economy system to a socialist market economy system, how to strengthen economic and trade exchanges with countries around the world while maintaining Chinese characteristics and adhering to the principles of mutual respect and mutual benefit is a topic worthy of serious discussion. To facilitate learning, the writing team has also compiled related exercises and reference answers along with this textbook.
