Features: This volume is the middle part of "Image Engineering," primarily introducing the second level of image engineering—basic concepts, fundamental principles, typical methods, practical techniques, and new research achievements in international image analysis. The main content of this volume is organized into five parts. The first part (Chapters 1, 2, and 3) introduces the fundamentals of image and image engineering, reviews related image processing techniques, and provides a detailed description of digitized images to lay the foundation for further study. The second part (Chapters 4, 5, 6, and 7) discusses the key step of image analysis—image segmentation. In addition to introducing basic image segmentation principles and techniques, it explains typical segmentation methods and their extensions commonly used in recent years, as well as a comprehensive overview of image segmentation evaluation. The third part (Chapters 8, 9, and 10) covers another set of key tasks in image analysis—target representation, description, and feature measurement, with a detailed discussion of measurement error analysis. The fourth part (Chapters 11, 12, and 13) introduces techniques for analyzing important characteristics of image targets, including texture, shape, and motion. The fifth part (Chapters 14 and 15) presents a class of important mathematical tools for image analysis—mathematical morphology methods (including binary and grayscale mathematical morphology). The book also introduces stereology principles closely related to image analysis. Numerous examples, thought-provoking questions, and exercises are provided, with solutions to some exercises. This book can serve as a foundational textbook for undergraduate and graduate students in disciplines such as signal and information processing, communication and information systems, electronic and communication engineering, pattern recognition and intelligent systems, and computer vision. It is also a valuable reference for researchers and professionals in fields including information and communication engineering, electronic science and technology, computer science and technology, measurement and control technology and instruments, robotics and automation, biomedical engineering, optics, electronic medical device development, remote sensing, surveying and mapping, and military reconnaissance.
