Lǐ Shūtóng was a pioneer of China's New Culture Movement and a renowned artist, educator, thinker, and reformer in modern Chinese history. As an early enlightenment figure of China's New Culture Movement, he made significant contributions in numerous cultural fields such as music, drama, art, poetry, seal carving, calligraphy, stone carving, education, philosophy, and law throughout his life, and he trained a large number of outstanding artistic talents. As one of the most distinguished monks in the modern history of Chinese Buddhism, he was revered as the Master of the Southern Mountain Precepts School and the Eleventh Patriarch of the Precepts School, gaining fame both at home and abroad.
