Most of the short stories in this book are from his famous work Letters from a Mill, and several selections from the war-themed Monday Tales are also included. Fanny and Sapho are an extremely beautiful love story. The story is about a young man from the provinces, Jean Galland, who meets the beautiful courtesan Fanny Legrand in Paris. Fanny is a woman who lives for love, and she falls deeply in love with Jean. She is fifteen years older than him and has a complex and sinful past, which Jean finds repulsive, yet he cannot help but become addicted to her tenderness. They live together for five years, but Jean meets a pure-hearted young woman he loves and wants to break off his relationship with Fanny. However, when he goes to see his lover for the last time, he realizes he cannot live without her. Jean accepts a diplomatic position in South America and wants to leave with Fanny, but later Fanny believes she has aged and feels exhausted by love, so she chooses to stay and does not go with him.
