Patient's question:
My wife initially only had a common gynecological condition, vulvar itching. It was usually fine with regular washing, but later, due to not paying enough attention, it developed into trichomoniasis. Now she often has low-grade fever, and sometimes even with excessive medication, her stomach gets upset. Anyway, the symptoms are very severe.Doctor's answer:
Trichomoniasis (trichomonal vaginitis) is a common type of vaginitis caused by the vaginal trichomonad. The trichomonad is pear-shaped with a pointed posterior end and is about 2 to 3 times the size of a multinucleated leukocyte. At the top of the trichomonad are four flagella, the body has a flagellar membrane, and the posterior end has a cylindrical protrusion. The live trichomonad is translucent and colorless, appearing like a water droplet. The flagella sway with the oscillation of the flagellar membrane. The life cycle of the trichomonad is simple, consisting only of a trophozoite stage without a cyst stage. It can survive for 2 days at 3 to 5°C; for 20 to 60 minutes at 46°C; for about 10 hours in a semi-dry environment; and for 45 to 120 minutes in ordinary soapy water. It does not grow in environments with a pH below 5 or above 7.5. The vaginal pH of patients with trichomoniasis is generally 5.1 to 5.4.
