How long after a transvaginal ultrasound can ectopic pregnancy be detected?

Patient's question:

I have been 7 days past my normal period and suspect I might be pregnant. After taking a test, the urine test was positive, but then I had vaginal bleeding—just a few drops of light red. I'm very afraid it could be an ectopic pregnancy. Can an ectopic pregnancy be detected with a transvaginal ultrasound? How long does it take to detect it?

Doctor's answer:

Compared to a regular ultrasound, a transvaginal ultrasound can detect pregnancy earlier. A regular MRI can usually detect pregnancy after 40 days, but in this case, it's best not to use a transvaginal ultrasound. If it's an intrauterine pregnancy, it's better to avoid stimulating the uterus to prevent miscarriage. Additionally, make sure to get adequate rest, avoid strenuous exercise, stay mentally relaxed, maintain good hygiene in the vaginal area, and avoid sexual intercourse. After one week, you should return for another diagnosis to check if it's an ectopic pregnancy.
