Preface: After the publication of Don’t Study English, I launched the Listening and Dictation Series (General Version·Advanced Edition) last month, which has also been highly favored by readers. The publishing industry generally believes that textbooks accompanied by tapes do not sell well, and the publishing house had secretly worried whether this series could sell as well and be loved by readers as much as Don’t Study English. I am truly fortunate. After the General Version·Advanced Edition was published last month, many suggested that a listening and dictation practice textbook suitable for high school students, vocational school students, and readers of similar levels should also be published. Many parents expressed a desire to learn English alongside their children, and some ordinary people also felt that the difficulty of the Advanced Edition was too high. This Junior Version·Popular Edition was published in response to these readers’ requests. The main content of this textbook is a story about a family with a high school student, making it very suitable for high school students, vocational school students, and their parents to learn together. The words selected in this textbook are easier than those in the General Version·Advanced Edition, so it is also very easy for those who have not studied English for a long time and have developed a fear of learning English. Since children learn to speak by listening and imitating without distinguishing the difficulty of the language, and the English words in the General Version·Advanced Edition are not very difficult, I personally do not want to make a simple division between the Junior Version and the General Version as the Popular Edition and the Advanced Edition. Therefore, I believe that readers can choose either series to practice. Because resistance or fear, as objective factors, cannot be denied, choose whichever suits your situation. High school and vocational school students may encounter difficulties when using this textbook due to their schoolwork. For them, the winter and summer vacations are a great opportunity to concentrate on training according to the tips in Don’t Study English, which will be more effective. It has been nearly four months since Don’t Study English was published, and nearly a month since the General Version·Advanced Edition of the listening and dictation textbook was published. The content of the emails I received from readers and the questions asked during my speeches have also changed significantly, many of which are specific problems encountered when learning English according to this new method. From this, I have learned that many people have already made progress, and I feel very relieved. Here, I would like to emphasize again that you must not refer to the original text of the textbook when practicing listening and dictation. I hope that through this book, everyone’s English level will improve. Zheng Zanyong November 10, 1999
Excerpt: A series of unfamiliar words will appear in the dictionary’s explanations or examples, and if you keep looking them up one after another, you will at least have to flip through half of an English-English dictionary. Of course, it is better to enter the dictation stage after listening to a few discs, because the more you are exposed to the language, the faster your language skills will improve.
Q: If I can’t hear anything no matter how hard I listen?
A: Those who say this are likely still not rid of the habit of “explaining.” Since the sound can be heard, the problem is whether you can distinguish subtle phonetic differences such as linking and elision. As long as your ears are adjusted, you can hear the sound. The more you listen, the more you can distinguish between familiar and unfamiliar words, but don’t worry about it. Once you start subconsciously realizing this, your ability to listen to sounds will stop developing. Those who believe they understand only as much as they hear are definitely subconsciously explaining the meaning of the sentences. The part that is said to be understood is already an explained sentence, while most of it may be understood in Korean. Those who feel the meaning of the text while listening are the ones who have succeeded in their listening practice.
Q: What should I do if I have to restart after a break?
A: No matter what, try to re-listen to the previous tape. If it feels the same as before, continue. Anyway, it is very important to concentrate on listening in the stage. Otherwise, due to the language’s self-understanding mechanism in the brain,
