Features: To support the implementation of the "College English Teaching Syllabus" (Revised Edition), the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP) launched the "College English" (New Edition) series textbooks at the beginning of the new century, contributing to the advancement of college English education in China. The entire series was co-authored by experienced professors and English teaching experts from renowned institutions such as Fudan University, Peking University, East China Normal University, University of Science and Technology of China, South China University of Technology, Nanjing University, Wuhan University, Nankai University, Sun Yat-sen University, and Huazhong University of Science and Technology. The series consists of three types of textbooks—Comprehensive, Listening and Speaking, and Reading (including Extensive and Fast Reading)—along with a Grammar Manual. Additionally, preparatory-level textbooks for the first three courses are available for students with lower starting levels. The series is centered around the "Comprehensive Textbook," with each unit exploring a theme reflecting contemporary life, supplemented by the "Listening and Speaking Textbook," "Reading Textbook," and "Fast Reading Textbook" to guide students in comprehensively acquiring and mastering language and cultural knowledge related to each theme. Each course includes exercises similar to those of the CET-4 and CET-6 exams, and the "Test Yourself" section in the "Comprehensive Textbook" is designed in the format of CET to familiarize students with the exam's format and requirements.
The "Comprehensive Textbook" (Volumes 1–4) is designed for first- and second-year English majors in higher education institutions and was co-authored by four universities: Shanghai International Studies University, Fudan University, East China Normal University, and Shanghai Normal University. The texts in Volumes 1–4 are primarily original works by British and American authors, with minor and modifications made in isolated cases. Except for a few classic articles, the majority of the texts are selected from original foreign textbooks, newspapers, magazines, and other publications published since the 1970s. The types of texts include narratives, expository essays, argumentative essays, and descriptive passages, covering themes such as society, culture, politics, ecology, technology, as well as humanistic education, interpersonal relationships, ethics, and character development, among others. We believe that foreign language learning should enhance students' humanistic knowledge and cultivate their cultural literacy. To this end, we have paid close attention to the humanistic nature of the text content in our selection process.
