Features: The progress of the 20th century was more attributed to engineering than to any other factor. However, today's American citizens, political leaders, and opinion leaders do not understand the indispensable role of engineering in daily decision-making. "The Greatest Engineering Achievements of the 20th Century" was a comprehensive public education initiative launched at the turn of the millennium, aimed at making people recognize the significant role engineering played in improving human quality of life during the 20th century. Twenty-seven engineering societies, the "National Engineer's Weekly," the American Society for Engineering Education, and the National Academy of Engineering participated in this four-year public education effort. The goal of the initiative was to convey a unified message to society through coordinated efforts and various media and extension means, helping the public understand the vital role of engineering.
