Features: In order to adapt to the reform of medical education and strengthen the construction of teaching materials, five medical schools—Peking University Health Science Center, Capital Medical University, Tianjin Medical University, Harbin Medical University, and Inner Mongolia Medical University—jointly researched and decided to compile a set of medical student textbooks based on the five-year undergraduate program. The purpose of publishing this set of textbooks is: 1. The content of the textbooks must be updated to meet the requirements of physicians for the 21st century. In recent years, medical technology has advanced rapidly, and the spectrum of diseases has undergone significant changes. The techniques for disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment have been greatly improved. The newly compiled textbooks must reflect these new achievements. 2. Physicians serve people, and they not only need a solid foundation in medical knowledge and clinical disciplines but also need to enhance their understanding of humanities and social sciences, such as health law, health economics, psychology, ethics, communication skills, and interpersonal relationships. Therefore, the newly compiled textbooks should include new subject content as well as interdisciplinary integration and crossover. 3. Education, including medical education, is gradually moving toward globalization, and the physicians we train should be internationally recognized. Moreover, the World Federation for Medical Education and the China Medical Foundation in the United States have established international standards for medical education or the minimum basic requirements for talent cultivation. This also provides us with a reference framework for compiling this set of textbooks. We plan to compile more than 30 textbooks, carefully selecting both the chief editors and the authors, who possess academic reputation and extensive teaching experience, and ensuring a balanced mix of experienced, middle-aged, and young professionals. In terms of content, format, style, printing, and binding, the textbooks should have distinctive features, aiming to be inspiring and engaging to stimulate students' interest and innovative thinking.
