Features: English departments in higher education institutions in China (including normal colleges and institutes of education) offer two courses in senior grades: "History of English and American Literature" and "Selected Readings in English and American Literary Works." It is advisable to teach the "History of Literature" alongside the "Selected Readings," as the two complement each other, otherwise a disconnect may occur. Therefore, it is necessary to compile a teaching material that combines a history of literature with selected literary works. This combined textbook is designed for senior-level English majors in higher education institutions. The history section provides a concise overview, while the writer and work section includes: (1) detailed introductions to writers; (2) summaries of works (if the selected text is a fragment of a work); (3) key selected readings, with concise coverage of older works and detailed treatment of newer ones; (4) annotations. In the classroom, teaching focuses primarily on the works, while the history section is left to the teacher for reference by students. Combining the history and selected readings in teaching can achieve twice the result with half the effort, delivering effective teaching outcomes. This is the purpose of compiling this book.
