A 3-year-old baby with intestinal inflammation and persistent fever: What should be done?

Patient's question:

My baby is only three years old now. Recently, she has been having diarrhea and has a slight fever. After a thorough examination at the hospital, the doctor said it was enteritis. I would like to ask what should be done if a three-year-old baby gets enteritis and always has a fever?

Doctor's answer:

Children often have fevers due to infections, with common causes including viruses, bacteria, mycoplasma, and so on. When children have recurring fevers, it suggests that the infection hasn't been properly suppressed. Pay attention to the condition of the throat, check a blood test to confirm whether it's a viral or bacterial infection, and provide additional anti-inflammatory and antiviral medications. For mild cases, oral medication can be used. If the fever persists after taking oral medication for more than three days, it's best to administer intravenous fluids. The child should rest more, drink plenty of water, and eat a light diet. Patients should develop good daily habits, maintain a regular sleep schedule, avoid smoking and alcohol, and increase physical activity to enhance their immunity and prevent the recurrence of the condition.
