Excerpt: A Poison Tree [1]
I was angry with my friend:
I told my wrath, my wrath did end.
I was angry with my foe:
I told it not, my wrath did grow.
[2]
And I watered it with fears,
Night and morning with my tears;
And I sunned it with smiles,
And with soft deceitful wiles.
[3]
And it grew both day and night,
Till it bore an apple bright.
And my foe beheld it shine,
And he knew that it was mine.
[4]
And in my garden stole,
When night had veiled the pole;
In the morning glad I see
My foe outstretched beneath the tree.
A Poison Tree [1]
I was angry with my friend:
I vented my anger, and it subsided.
I was angry with my foe:
I kept it silent, and it deepened.
[2]
I nurtured it with fear,
Day and night with tears I poured;
I basked it in smiles,
And with soft, deceitful tricks I fed it.
[3]
It grew both day and night,
Till it bore a bright apple.
My foe saw it gleam,
And knew it was mine.
[4]
When night veiled the world,
He stealthily stole into my garden;
In the morning, with joy I saw
My foe stretched beneath the tree.
