Features: In the tumultuous Beihai painting movement of the late Qing Dynasty, which continued to resonate into the Republic of China era, Ren Boren was a pivotal figure yet often criticized by literati painters. The majestic floral paintings of Beihai master Wu Changshuo clearly originated from Ren Boren. In terms of figure painting, Ren Boren drew inspiration from his near contemporaries Ren Xiong and Ren Xun, as well as the ancient masters Zhang Daqian and Chen Hongshou, excelling in both meticulous and freehand styles, forging his own unique path and becoming one of the most outstanding masters of expressive figure painting in traditional Chinese art history. While Ren Boren may not have matched Wu Changshuo's refined and profound brushwork, this led to severe criticism from modern literati painters like Pan Tianshou. However, in terms of subject matter and artistic expression, Ren Boren far surpassed Wu Changshuo and his peers, earning the extreme admiration of Xu Beihong and exerting a profound influence on the modern Zhejiang School of New Figure Painting. The rhetorical question posed by Xu Gu from the late Qing Dynasty, "Your art has reached its pinnacle—can anyone follow in your footsteps?" remains a powerful inspiration for modern Chinese figure painters to this day. Due to the severe decline of traditional literati painting and the rise of academic-style painting, Ren Boren has recently garnered renewed attention. Last year, on the occasion of his 140th birthday, commemorative events and seminars were held in his hometown, Xiaoshan. In December 2001, at the International Academic Symposium on Beihai Painting organized by Shanghai Fine Arts Publishing House and this journal, the comprehensive characteristics of Ren Boren's painting, which are both closely linked to and distinct from literati painting, sparked intense interest among experts and scholars.
