Features: Since the late 1980s, with the steady improvement of people's material living standards, amateur music grading and examination activities have been flourishing in China. Their extensive coverage, diverse categories, and large number of participants have far exceeded what relevant individuals initially anticipated. The sight of children aged three or four learning to play musical instruments, with adults accompanying them in groups to participate in examinations, has become a unique and vibrant feature of urban life. These phenomena fully reflect people's demand and desire for an artistic life, and clearly demonstrate that the concept of comprehensive quality-oriented education, including aesthetic education, is deeply rooted in society. This undoubtedly holds great practical significance for social progress, educational development, and even the improvement of national quality, exerting a profound impact.
Music examinations originated in the UK, initially established by the UK Royal College of Music examination institution as an extracurricular music examination system primarily focused on instrumental music. Starting in the 1980s, as a wave of enthusiasm for learning musical instruments swept among Chinese youth and adolescents, this examination system began to attract attention from the Chinese music community. In 1988, the Shanghai Music pioneered the establishment of amateur piano grading examinations in China. Subsequently, the scope of examinations gradually expanded, with the review of grading syllabi, classification standards, and the compilation of examination pieces becoming increasingly standardized year by year. A scientific and rigorous system and operational mechanism were also established in all aspects of the examination process, including registration, examiner selection, and grading, ensuring and promoting the smooth progress of the examination work. Therefore, the publication and release of the Shanghai Music Music Examination Series can be seen as an inevitable outcome of the Shanghai Music's efforts to perfect the examination system, built upon 15 years of experience in music examinations.
