He began studying piano at the age of six and was later taught by composers such as Salieri, Czerny, Rehfeld, and Baer. At the age of sixteen, he settled in Paris and was influenced by the Romantic literary figures Hugo, Lamartine, and Chateaubriand, among others, and aspired to bourgeois revolution. In music, he advocated program music and created the genre of symphonic poem, composing thirteen works such as Prelude, Mazeppa, and Prometheus. Inspired by Paganini, he wrote nineteen Hungarian Rhapsodies, twelve advanced etudes, and created orchestral effects on the piano, greatly expanding the expressive capabilities of piano music. In 1865, he underwent a tonsure ceremony in Vatican City and accepted the position of "Abbot," but he continued to engage in composition and teaching. In 1875, he founded the Budapest Academy of Music and served as its president.
