Collection of Exegesis on Ancient Characters

Author: Liu Zhao
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2005-07-01
Features: This book includes a selection of articles by the author on ancient script research over the past decade or so. Except for three unpublished pieces, all have been formally published in various journals and collections. The content of the articles is diverse, but the interpretation of ancient scripts remains the main feature. Ancient script research, as Mr. Yu Shengwu once said, is a field that requires much effort but yields little reward. It involves too many disciplines, and the historical academic legacy is too profound. Therefore, to make breakthroughs and gains in this field indeed demands more heart and soul than general studies. Ancient script research is a discipline of looking backward, which contradicts the various "keep pace with the times" new studies of today, often leading it to be neglected and overlooked. Seeing some young scholars who take pleasure in hardship, willingly endure poverty, and diligently study ancient scripts can truly evoke a sense of holy martyrdom and tragic grandeur. This holiness and tragedy are the very spirit that allows this discipline to continue to thrive and evolve.
