Features: The music of China's ethnic minorities is an important component of Chinese ethnic music. This book is based on the lecture notes for the introductory course on ethnic minority music at the Music Department of the Central Conservatory of Music in China. The book is divided into three parts: Part I, Introduction, briefly introduces the general overview of China's ethnic minorities and the history of ethnic minority music. Part II, General Theory, discusses the musical systems and forms adopted in the traditional music of China's ethnic minorities, as well as the cultural classification and categorization methods of ethnic minority music. It also provides an overview of the development of new ethnic minority music and the role and significance of ethnic minority music in the education of Chinese mother-tongue music. Part III, Folk Music of Ethnic Minorities, introduces the brief of folk music from various ethnic minorities based on the linguistic classification system. Due to limited class time, it is impossible for teachers to cover all ethnic minority folk music in class. Therefore, this part can select some ethnic groups to introduce based on actual circumstances. Although this course is designed for undergraduate students majoring in musicology, it can also be used for elective courses for students from other disciplines.
