Features: Like an aria in a tranquil night, a rose in a gloomy castle—facing the darkness of death, dozens of famous Western novelists from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with their swift imagination and elegant prose, have conjured for you a series of enchanting worlds. Behind these bizarre and chilling works, you will experience the "beautiful death and sublime horror" amidst the bones. Music: It drifts over the sandy shore, over the sea, amidst the bones, a flute melody, the sound of a drum in the distance, and faint chimes. It drifts over the arid fields, over the sky above the sea of flowers. Mountains, can’t you hear us? Help! Help! Mountains. We are willing to dissolve, to die among the dead!
This is a novel that breaks new ground. The author attempts to combine the supernatural evil forces of horror fiction with the investigation and puzzle-solving of classic detective fiction, achieving a unique effect. Moreover, the story is exceptionally engaging and has been highly praised by The New York Times. It was later adapted into a film in 1940, causing a sensation. Compared to the previous collection, this one features a clear shift in style and subject matter. In addition to short and medium-length works, several longer pieces have been included, enhancing its readability. The works in this collection range from sea adventures to human horrors, from sorrowful laments to satirical humor, from ghosts and werewolves to divine and supernatural beings. Most of the plots are mysterious and terrifying, with each work often featuring a supernatural entity inspired by mythology or legend. These beings are filled with evil, wreaking havoc in the world and bringing death and disaster to humanity.
Undoubtedly, these chilling and readable works, written by classic supernatural fiction masters mostly from the early 20th century, laid the foundation for modern Western horror fiction. They are worth the careful appreciation of readers who love horror.
