Features: India is an ancient oriental civilization with a long history and splendid culture. The Indus River Valley is one of the cradles of ancient civilizations. Indian sculpture is a treasure of Indian art and can be compared to that of ancient Greece and Rome. It has a distinct style in both content and form. The development of Indian sculpture is closely related to religion, as these works were originally not created as standalone art but served religious activities directly. It was not until modern times that people gradually discovered the aesthetic value of Indian sculpture. This book outlines the history of Indian sculpture along the timeline of its development. Starting from the prehistoric sculptures unearthed in Mohenjo-Daro, it narrates the journey of Indian sculpture until its decline, providing a detailed and comprehensive depiction of this colorful tapestry of Indian sculpture art. In this book, readers can see the exquisite Ashoka Pillars of the Mauryan Empire, the beautiful Yakshini sculptures on the Great Stupa of Sanchi, and gain an understanding of the Gandhara art, the harmonious fusion of Eastern and Western cultures. Additionally, the book covers medieval Hindu-themed sculptures. Indian sculpture art is a vivid and concrete embodiment of the multiple ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds in India. Furthermore, Indian sculpture art, as religion spread, influenced countries in South Asia and Southeast Asia. Chinese cave sculpture art can be said to have directly originated from Indian sculpture. Studying Indian sculpture art holds significant positive meaning for clarifying the origins of Chinese sculpture art. This is also a key focus of this book.
