How to replenish amniotic fluid after amniocentesis?

Patient's question:

Last week, I had an amniocentesis. I saw that a lot of amniotic fluid was extracted. I was told that too little amniotic fluid is not good for the baby. I don't know if this can be replenished, and how to replenish it. How do doctors replenish amniotic fluid after an amniocentesis?

Doctor's answer:

Amniotic fluid is the liquid that fills the amniotic cavity. In the early stages of pregnancy, the amniotic fluid primarily originates from the dialysate that enters the amniotic cavity through the fetal membrane from maternal serum. After the middle stages of early pregnancy, fetal urine becomes the main source of amniotic fluid, gradually reducing its osmotic pressure. In the late stages of pregnancy, fetal lungs contribute to the formation of amniotic fluid, expelling 600~800 milliliters of liquid daily from the alveoli into the amniotic cavity. Additionally, the amniotic membrane, Wharton's jelly of the umbilical cord, and fetal skin also secrete fluid, which is another source of amniotic fluid, though in smaller quantities.
