Patient's question:
Last month, I just gave birth to my baby, but in recent days, I've noticed multiple severe odors in my lower body. I quickly went to the hospital for a thorough examination and found trichomoniasis. However, I am currently breastfeeding and don't know what to do about trichomoniasis during breastfeeding.Doctor's answer:
Trichomoniasis primarily manifests as an increase in vaginal discharge and itching of the external genitalia. The typical characteristics of the discharge are foamy and have an odor. Treatment can mainly involve systemic medication, such as oral metronidazole. Local treatment includes vaginal douching and sitz baths, using vaginal suppositories containing metronidazole. The treatment course typically lasts seven to ten days. During treatment, it is important to prevent reinfection—underwear and towels should be boiled for five to ten minutes. Sexual activity is strictly prohibited during treatment, and both partners should be treated simultaneously. During lactation, medication should not be administered within 24 hours after use, as metronidazole is excreted in breast milk.
