Is an endometrial polyp the same as a cervical polyp?

Patient's question:

A few days ago, I went with my best friend for a gynecological examination. She went to the hospital because she had symptoms of vaginal lesions. The B results showed that she had endometrial polyps. I want to ask if endometrial polyps are the same as cervical polyps? Do they all need to be surgically removed?

Doctor's answer:

Endometrial polyps are different from cervical polyps. However, both require surgical treatment. Endometrial polyps grow on the endometrium, while cervical polyps grow on the cervical mucosa. But sometimes, when endometrial polyps are very long, they may also extend into the cervical canal or even reach the external cervical os, making it difficult to distinguish them from cervical polyps externally. Generally, a hysteroscopy can be considered for diagnosis.
