Publish Date: 2005-05-01
Features: This book was compiled during the author's recent years of involvement in major national public welfare projects and agricultural restructuring projects under the Ministry of Agriculture. It is based on in-depth field investigations into the deserts and xerophytic vegetation of western Inner Mongolia, as well as extensive research on common plant species used in ecological management in the western desert areas, some plant species with potential for domestication and cultivation, and certain rare and endangered plant species. Additionally, it incorporates a review of a large number of domestic and international scientific and technical literature. The book is divided into five chapters. The first half elaborates on the distribution, geomorphology, climate, hydrology, and vegetation characteristics of western Inner Mongolia. It describes the regional characteristics of vegetation in the western desert areas, the traits of xerophytic plants, the classification of vegetation types in the desert areas, and the distribution ranges, community characteristics, morphological features of dominant plants, community composition, and canopy types of 37 main shrub communities. The second half discusses the severity and urgency of ecological management in the desert areas, past achievements and existing problems in desertification control, as well as future experience and methods for managing desertification. It provides a detailed explanation of the biological and ecological characteristics and planting techniques of 35 artificially planted xerophytic plant species used in ecological management.
