Features: To reassess China's environmental conditions, we conducted a two-year study, "China: Air, Land, and Water," which represents the outcomes of this research. The study was completed in collaboration with the World Bank, the National Environmental Protection Administration of China, and many other technical and research institutions in China. Based on this study and extensive consultations, the World Bank has proposed numerous programs and policies that will help improve China's environmental quality, although there are still many emerging pollution sources and challenges in natural resource management. Over the past 20 years, China's economic output growth has consistently outpaced the rate of environmental resource degradation. To maintain this successful trend, China needs to strike a balance between environmental protection and continuous industrialization, urbanization, and the improvement of agricultural productivity. The readership of this book is broad, and anyone concerned with the environmental quality in Asia will find it interesting. The accompanying CD-ROM provides background research and additional technical details.
