Born into a family of traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, he inherited his family's medical knowledge from a young age and completed his classical Confucian education by the age of 14 before specializing in medicine. At the age of 18, he began practicing medicine independently. In 1955, he was transferred to the Research Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine, where he actively contributed to research, teaching, and clinical practice, particularly excelling in the diagnosis and treatment of otolaryngology, as evidenced by the specialized disease treatments in this book. He authored works such as The True Principles of Laryngology and The Lantern Record of the, highlighting the characteristics of the Geng family's laryngology, especially in treating acute, severe, critical, and life-threatening conditions. Additionally, Geng Jianting had a broad knowledge of literature and history, with significant research in bibliography, etymology, epigraphy, ancient artifact studies, and cultural relics archaeology. He also made important contributions to the organization of traditional Chinese medical literature, including initiating the collaboration with the Beijing Library to compile The Joint Catalogue of National Traditional Chinese Medical Books, which became one of the reference tools for the of ancient Chinese medical texts.
