"Zhang Wucai wrote in One Weekly about 'The Fragrance River Pen', saying he spotted an ad on a plane: 'The Fragrance River Pen Leads the Trend.' He remarked, 'I told myself: I didn’t place this ad—could it be Ah Kang acting crazy? Unable to resist, I asked the passenger to borrow the paper. Turns out, the protagonist was Lin Xingzhi. I thought: Well, that makes sense. Shanmu really is the Fragrance River Pen!' How I wish I hadn’t said, 'I didn’t place this ad'! Professor Zhang has always been proud of his writings, treating them like his own wife—neither a broom nor to be trifled with, even boasting about them, which has long been a celebrated anecdote. This time, even he admits Lin Shanmu is the Fragrance River Pen, proving the claim that he leads the trend is undeniable." — Apple Daily, Dong Qiao
"In one of my small writing circles where I pen in Chinese, Shanmu (Lin Xingzhi) and I have been rare and excellent partners. We all hold beliefs but no prejudices; we all dare to take risks and try new things; we are not tied to materialism, regardless of what others say; we all believe that the art of writing should be concise and clear, sincere, and old-fashioned is unacceptable." — Zhang Wucai
"Lin Shanmu (Lin Xingzhi) and Qian Liangyong (Jin Yong) can both be considered special products of Hong Kong’s cultural scene. If Qian Liangyong is the master of the 'free' intellectuals of the 1960s in Hong Kong, then Lin Shanmu, who hails from the 'Ming' school and is a disciple of Qian Liangyong, can be said to be the outstanding figure of the 1980s." — Fang Kam-miu
