Patient's question:
I and my husband didn't want to have children too early after getting married, but my husband is allergic to condoms. The people at the pharmacy recommended taking contraceptive pills for short-term visits. What are contraceptive pills?Doctor's answer:
Oral contraceptives are divided into four categories: short-acting, long-acting, temporary-use, and emergency contraceptives. The temporary-use contraceptive mentioned by the patient is one of these, based on a pure progestogen formulation. Its lactation mechanism primarily involves altering the viscosity of cervical mucus and the tissue morphology of the endometrium, which facilitates implantation of the fertilized egg. Temporary-use contraceptives are mainly used by couples living in different locations during their visit period (also suitable for newlyweds using them for a short term), also known as emergency contraceptives. Currently, there are eight types of temporary-use contraceptives used in China:(1) Megestrol (also known as Temporary-Use Contraceptive No. 1)
(2) Ethynodiol (also known as Tianjin Temporary-Use Pill)
(3) 18-Methyl-ethynodiol (also known as 18-Me Temporary-Use Pill)
(4) Ethynylestradiol Acetate Temporary-Use Pill
(5) Diethylstilbestrol Carbonate (also known as Temporary-Use Contraceptive No. 53)
