Features: In the history of over 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, the 20th century was a great era of transformation. The historical events that took place on the Chinese mainland during this period had an unprecedentedly profound impact and tremendous promotion on the course of Chinese history. The history of China in the 20th century is a magnificent epic of a historical turning point that overturned the old order. As the main marker of this great historical turning point, the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949 stands. Taking this as a boundary stone, it can be roughly said that the first half of this century, from old democracy to new democracy, was a period of struggle for establishing a people's republic, a time when democratic revolution was carried out as the main means to seek national independence and people's liberation; the second half of this century, from new democracy to socialism, was a period of struggle for building a people's republic, a time when economic construction was the main content, working to make China a prosperous and strong modern socialist country through socialist construction. The grand historical mission bestowed by the times fell upon the shoulders of hundreds of millions of Chinese people. Whether it was the democratic revolution or the socialist revolution and socialist construction, naturally, they were all the cause of the broad masses of the people, and they could only be realized through the common wisdom and efforts of the entire Chinese people. It was precisely in this creative historical activity led by the people that a large number of outstanding representatives emerged, reflecting the needs of the masses, embodying the will of the masses, and embodying the wisdom of the masses. Like all great transformative eras in history, the 20th century in China was an era of great changes and the emergence of outstanding figures. It was the great era that produced a galaxy of historical giants; it was precisely the arduous struggles and glorious achievements of these historical giants that fully reflected the trends of the times and the aspirations of the people, vividly and profoundly reflecting the great era moving forward. Their life's achievements are precisely the of this unprecedented historical transformation from the old China to the new China. For this reason, compiling the biographies of outstanding historical figures who founded the People's Republic of China as a generation of biographies has a significance that far exceeds the scope of recording individual lives. This series of biographies undoubtedly should be regarded as a moving historical scroll composed of the lifeblood and sweat of countless millions of patriotic martyrs and revolutionary pioneers in contemporary China, a revolutionary monument that will stand forever in the hearts of generations of people. Each biography in the "Contemporary Chinese Biographies" series can be read as the history of saving the country in contemporary China, the history of founding the People's Republic of China, and the history of building the country; each biography can be read as the history of ending the suffering and perilous fate of China, the history of pioneering the construction of socialism. The "Contemporary Chinese Biographies" series, the first batch of biographies to be compiled are those of the founding heroes of the People's Republic of China and outstanding figures in various fields. The protagonists of these biographies will include: the main leaders of the Party and the State (among whom the biographies of Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Liu Shaoqi, Zhu De, Deng Xiaoping, and Chen Yun will be written and published by the Documentation and Research Center of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China), the outstanding marshals in the People's Liberation Army with meritorious deeds, the leaders of the various democratic parties involved in the founding of the new China and famous patriotic figures in various fields, prominent scientists, writers, and artists who have made outstanding contributions, as well as internationalist fighters who have made significant contributions to the cause of China's democratic revolution and socialist cause, and so on. Without a doubt, they are not only the outstanding representatives of contemporary China, but also historical giants who will be recorded in the annals of eternity. Of course, like all historical figures, the outstanding representatives of our time could not but be limited by historical conditions, and they would inevitably have various weaknesses and shortcomings, and they might also make certain mistakes in their lives. However, all of these, like the eclipses of the sun and moon, would not damage the brilliance of their image if they were openly and honestly made public. The achievements they created for the Chinese nation, their revolutionary spirit, noble sentiments, outstanding talent, wisdom, and exemplary words and deeds are all shocking to the past and enlightening to the future, setting an example for later generations. This is a precious spiritual wealth that the Chinese nation should cherish forever. It will become the best textbook for cultivating the patriotic spirit and socialist belief of generations of Chinese people. At present, the Chinese people are working hard under the grand design of Comrade Deng Xiaoping and under the leadership of the Central Committee with Comrade Jiang Zemin at its core, to achieve the second strategic goal of socialist modernization and to reach a moderately prosperous society in this century. May people learn from the glorious achievements of these historical figures in this "Contemporary Chinese Biographies" series, taking their revolutionary spirit of self-sacrifice, patriotic sentiments, and firm socialist belief as an example, and making greater contributions to the historical cause of the Chinese nation. General Wang Shangrong was a trusted general of He Long and was personally ordered by He Long to lead the second and sixth armies to hold back during the Long March. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he successively served as the acting Minister and Minister of the Operations Department of the General Staff of the People's Liberation Army, and as Deputy Chief of the General Staff. In all military actions after the founding of the People's Republic of China, such as suppressing the rebellion in Tibet, eliminating the remnants of the Kuomintang fleeing to Myanmar, shelling Jinmen, and the self-defense counterattack against India, he was stationed in the Operations Department, participating in combat dispatch, conveying the commands of the supreme command to the front lines of the war. During the Cultural Revolution, he was falsely accused of being a core member of He Long's anti-Party group and suffered great hardships. This book provides a detailed introduction to the life of General Wang Shangrong.
