Features: Shanghai is located between 120°52′-121°45′ east longitude and 30°-32°27′ north latitude. It lies on the western coast of the Pacific Ocean, the eastern coast of the Asian continent, and is the central point of China's northern and southern coastal regions. It is also the confluence of the Yangtze River and the Qiantang River as they flow into the sea. Shanghai is bordered by the vast East China Sea to the west and backed by the expansive continent. With a total area of approximately 6,340.5 square kilometers, it serves as the gateway to the beautiful and prosperous Yangtze River Delta. Since the 1990s, Shanghai's urban construction has accelerated with a focus on functional and hub infrastructure, enhancing the city's urban functions, improving the investment environment, and optimizing the urban layout. The city has undergone tremendous changes.
Shanghai has been adjusting its development strategy to build a new industrial hub, leveraging informatization to drive industrialization, and actively responding to the challenges of joining the WTO, achieving significant progress and maintaining sustained healthy economic growth. Since the opening and development of the Pudong area, Shanghai has vigorously promoted industrial upgrading, functional development, and institutional innovation, fully demonstrating its role as a model, radiation center, and driving force. The regional economy has grown at a rate higher than the city's average for 13 consecutive years. On December 3, 2002, at the 132nd General Assembly of the Bureau International des Expositions in Monaco, representatives from 89 member countries selected Shanghai as the host city for the 2010 World Expo. Looking back on the long and arduous journey of applying for the Expo, it was the passion and determination of the Chinese people, as well as the charm and prospects of the Chinese market, that moved and attracted the world.
Facing the 21st century full of opportunities and challenges, Shanghai has set new medium- and long-term development goals: to build Shanghai into a modern international metropolis and one of the world's leading economic, financial, trade, and shipping centers, taking the lead in achieving basic modernization. The future of Shanghai will be even brighter.
