Is trichomoniasis contagious?

Patient's question:

I bought some medications for unclogging and cleaning, and suggested my husband also get a thorough check-up, fearing he might have been infected by me.

Doctor's answer:

Trichomoniasis is caused by the Trichomonas vaginalis parasite, which is transmitted through sexual contact or indirectly (such as through public baths, swimming pools, clothing, sterile gauze, and industrial-contaminated medical devices). It primarily manifests as itching in the external genitalia, increased vaginal discharge, and a thin, yellowish, foamy discharge. In severe cases, the discharge may contain blood. Symptoms may also include a burning sensation, pain during intercourse, and, if accompanied by urethral infection, frequent urination, painful urination, or even hematuria. The causative agent of trichomoniasis is Trichomonas vaginalis. Trichomonas vaginalis is a parasitic organism that is invisible to the naked eye. This parasite is pear-shaped, measuring 10–30 μm in length, with four flagella of equal length to the body at the head, which can be clearly observed under a microscope.
