Outline of Annotation Studies

Author: Wang Yaonan
Publisher:
Publish Date: 1997-04-01
Features: Although the book is divided into chapters and sections, it differs significantly from typical chapter-based works. Most chapters can stand alone as independent pieces. For example, in the chapter "History of Ancient Annotations," the author expands his perspective beyond the history of classical studies, providing an insightful analysis of the characteristics of annotations in the Zang, Shi, and Ji sections of literature, as well as the features of textual annotations across different historical periods. This chapter can be considered a specialized treatise. It was serialized in two issues of the Journal of Documents and won the Hubei Provincial Social Sciences Outstanding Paper Award. The chapter "Modern Translation" was published in the Journal of Ancient Texts Research, while the "Understanding Homophones" chapter was included in the Lectures of the Research Group on Documentary Studies edited by Mr. Zhang Shunxi. These contributions are not accidental. Regarding reference works, the book also theoretically clarifies the relationship between dictionary entries and contextual explanations in texts, thereby addressing how dictionaries should be utilized during the annotation process. However, this aspect is not discussed in a dedicated chapter, which would have made the book more comprehensive.
