How to handle cervical polyp bleeding?

Patient's question:

I have been experiencing irregular periods recently. Sometimes they come earlier, and other times the delay is quite long. I haven't paid much attention to it. Lately, my vaginal discharge has also been abnormal, sometimes mixed with blood. I feel upset. The hospital examination revealed that I have cervical polyps. Should I treat this with medication or surgery?

Doctor's answer:

For the treatment of cervical polyps, surgical removal is the primary approach. However, if inflammation is present, infection must be controlled first; when bleeding occurs, medication is used as the initial treatment, followed by surgery after inflammation is managed. Although cervical polyps rarely become cancerous, the canceration rate is still between 0.2% and 0.4%. For women under 45 years old, especially those around menopause, surgical removal of cervical polyps should be followed by pathological examination of the polyps. If malignant changes are detected, early treatment measures should be adopted. Additionally, this condition is prone to recurrence, so regular follow-up examinations should be conducted every three months. If irregular menstruation, abnormal vaginal discharge, or abdominal discomfort occurs, further evaluation is necessary.
