Does uterine fibroids worsen?

Patient's question:

A normal menstrual cycle has changed again, and the blood flow is particularly heavy. The hospital conducted a thorough examination and said I have uterine fibroids, asking me to have surgery.

Doctor's answer:

In middle-aged women over 35, some may suffer from uterine fibroids. The probability of uterine fibroids continuing to worsen is very small, generally less than 1%. Therefore, most fibroids do not need to be removed; they only require periodic follow-up and careful examination. Surgical treatment should be considered in the following cases:
1. Uterine fibroids cause heavy bleeding, or prolonged menstrual periods leading to anemia that cannot be cured with medication. In this case, surgical removal is an effective solution.
2. Uterine fibroids grow to the size of a fist, causing other organs in the pelvis to be compressed. Surgical removal can alleviate symptoms, and large fibroids have a higher probability of continuing to worsen compared to smaller ones.
3. The fibroids grow too rapidly, or after menopause, the fibroids not only do not expand but actually become larger.
