How is uterine fibroids treated in Traditional Chinese Medicine?

Patient's question:

I've been feeling irregular vaginal bleeding lately, along with lower abdominal pain and backache. I went to the hospital, and the doctor recommended an ultrasound. The results showed a 3mm tumor in the uterus. The doctor said it's not necessary to have surgery and that medication can be used for treatment.

Doctor's answer:

In the implementation of TCM treatment for uterine fibroids, the primary approach is to classify symptoms based on syndrome differentiation:
1. Phlegm-dampness as the main symptom: A mass in the lower abdomen, occasional pain, soft to the touch, with excessive leucorrhea.
- Cold-pattern: Leucorrhea is white and viscous, the body feels cold, chest and upper abdomen feel full and stuffy, frequent urination, white greasy tongue coating, dark purple tongue, fine, damp, and deep slippery pulse.
- Heat-pattern: Leucorrhea is yellow and viscous, with a foul odor, sometimes purulent, chest tightness and restlessness, feverishness, thirst, decreased yellow urine, yellow greasy tongue coating, red tongue, wiry or rapid slippery pulse.
- Miscellaneous disorder: Regulating qi, cooling blood, resolving masses.
2. Blood stasis as the main symptom: A hard, fixed mass in the lower abdomen, painful to the touch, accompanied by dark complexion, dry skin, excessive menstrual flow or delayed periods, dry mouth with no desire to drink.
- Red tongue with petechiae on the edges, deep and stasis-painful pulse.
- Miscellaneous disorder: Promoting blood circulation, resolving stasis, dispersing masses.
