How to treat uterine fibroids from a TCM perspective

Patient's question:

I feel a persistent mild pain in my lower abdomen, and it becomes particularly painful during sexual intercourse with my husband at night. Last week, I had a thorough examination at the hospital, and the result was uterine fibroids. The doctor recommended traditional Chinese medicine treatment.

Doctor's answer:

Ancient Chinese medicine believes that the onset of uterine fibroids is closely related to emotional distress, primarily due to a weak constitution, physical exhaustion after menstruation or childbirth, followed by exposure to wind and cold, where cold pathogens invade the uterus, or internal injury from extreme cold or anger that damages the liver, leading to internal Qi deficiency and disharmony among the organs. The spleen's function of transportation is impaired, Qi and blood become excessive without a source, ultimately resulting in Qi stagnation and blood stasis or Qi deficiency and blood stasis. Blood clots accumulate in the uterus, delaying the menstrual vessels and damaging the Chong and Ren meridians, preventing new blood from returning to its proper path. Over time, this develops into "congealed masses" (bi). This is a severe condition characterized by large, hard accumulations, requiring both root and symptom treatment. Uterine fibroids are a difficult disease to recover from. Patients should always maintain a positive attitude and face it with optimism, as this can boost their confidence in combating the condition and believe that recovery is possible.
