How is candidal vulvovaginitis treated?

Patient's question:

I have been experiencing itching and pain in my vagina recently. My vaginal discharge smells foul and looks like cottage cheese, especially before and after my period, when the itching is severe. I have also developed symptoms of frequent urination, urgency, and pain during urination. The vagina feels like it's burning. After a thorough examination at the hospital, I was diagnosed with candidiasis (yeast infection). How is candidiasis treated?

Doctor's answer:

10,000 U vaginal suppositories, insert 1 time in the morning and 1 time in the evening into the deep vagina for a total of 5 days. Wash the external genital area and apply nystatin ointment (10,000 U/g) 2 to 3 times per day. After treatment, to promote vaginal epithelial regeneration, a very small amount of estrogen (ethinyl estradiol 0.25 to 0.5 mg/day for 3 to 5 days) can be used. In case of symptomatic cases, gastrointestinal carriage should be considered, and nystatin 500,000 U can be taken concurrently, 4 times per day. When patients are affected by vaginitis, we should actively implement thorough examinations and treatments, and not avoid seeking medical attention. If vaginitis does not improve with treatment, it is important to promptly switch to an alternative treatment plan.
