Is uterine fibroids serious?

Patient's question:

I am 31 years old this year. Recently, I have had stomach pain and always feel uncomfortable. I don't know what's wrong with me. I went to the hospital for a thorough examination, and the doctor said I have uterine fibroids.

Doctor's answer:

Uterine fibroids are the most common benign tumor of the female reproductive system, primarily caused by the fibrosis of immature uterine smooth muscle cells. They are also known as leiomyomas or myomas of the uterus, and they grow from the uterine muscle layer. When the tumor is surrounded by the muscle layer, it is called an intramural uterine fibroid. If it expands towards the serosal surface of the uterus and becomes weak at the surface, it is referred to as a subserous uterine fibroid. In fact, having uterine fibroids is not something to be feared. Patients should believe that they can overcome the disease. As long as symptoms are detected early and treated accordingly, the chances of controlling the condition and recovering are very high.
