Features: The legal system of China in the 20th century was filled with earth-shaking transformations. Over this century, the traditional Chinese legal system underwent a transformation, beginning to align with the modern legal systems of the world. The traditional legal concept centered on Confucian ethics was updated to one dominated by democracy and the rule of law, which became the ideological foundation for the modernization of China's legal system. Meanwhile, since the Opium War, the patriotic spirit aimed at survival and national rejuvenation, as well as strengthening the nation, has been the driving force behind the modernization of China's legal system. The unique national conditions of modern China determined that advanced thinkers, patriots, and reform pioneers were often a combination of all three. Moreover, the modernization of the economy and the continuous democratization of political systems undoubtedly provided the necessary material foundation and political guarantees for the modernization of the legal system. During this process, the transplantation of advanced legal cultures also played a certain guiding role. The history of China's legal system in the 20th century reflects the irrefutable laws of historical development and offers valuable lessons for contemporary reference. Overall, this history not only boosts confidence in advancing the strategy of governing the country according to law but also helps in building a legal system and judicial system with Chinese characteristics in the 21st century. This is crucial for China to achieve autonomy and self-reliance in a highly competitive international environment. To explore the objective laws of the development of China's legal system in the 20th century and look ahead to its prospects in the 21st century, the Research Office of China University of Political Science and Law, the Legal Life Office, and the Institute of Legal History convened a symposium titled "Retrospection and Prospects of China's Legal System in the 20th Century" in April 2000, with approximately 120 scholars and experts from home and abroad in attendance. This collection of essays is a compilation of the research findings of these scholars and experts, from which one can see their focus of attention, cautious exploration, and the collision of various intellectual sparks.
