Is bleeding after taking birth control pills the same as a menstrual period?

Patient's question:

Two days ago, I just had a minor abortion surgery. I was afraid that people would find out that I secretly went to a pharmacy to buy and took birth control pills. But after taking the birth control pills, there was bleeding from below. Is that my period? Why did I have my period after taking birth control pills?

Doctor's answer:

After taking birth control pills, if you experience menstruation again, it is not actual menstruation. It is a withdrawal bleeding caused by taking birth control medication, which is a side effect of the pills. Generally, it does not require treatment. If the bleeding is relatively heavy, it can be considered equivalent to a menstrual period. The next menstrual cycle will usually follow this pattern. It is recommended to use proper contraception methods. Taking birth control pills frequently is generally not advised.
